HBO released a new trailer to their adaption of George R. R. Martins A song of ice and fire saga
This book series is my favourite fantasy series, I even would recommend it to people who normally HATE fantasy novels, because it’s not stuck up with the old cliches of the genre. If there is one fantasy book you SHOULD read, it’s not the lord of the rings (boring and slow paced in comparison to the films…) and no it’s not a gor novel (you know, I had to say that) but it’s “a game of thrones”- the first novel of the series. The setting reminds me of the 100 year war and the war of the roses, it’s a multilayered, complex and intriguing story, describing the rise and fall of several noble families and their struggle for power over the iron throne. And while winter is coming, which will last for decades there, an ancient and supernatural danger is crossing the northern border. They’re called simply the “Others”, pale and with burning blue eyes (read: ice ghouls). The story is told through the point of view of several members of the different families. Aside from some real clever intrigues, sex and violence the characters are most remarkable, may they be figures of legend or the 8 year old son of a lord. I have never read a book with such good, believable and interesting Characters. And there are loads of good characters, even the minor ones…in the last novel there are 60 pages alone only for dramatis personae. It’s really easy for the reader to sympathize with several of them, but in the world of Westeros, heros aren’t immortal and neither children nor innocent princesses are spared. It’s very dark and gritty and i sincerely hope that HBO doesn’t fuck this masterpiece up! Ok they have experience with that kind of stories…but i fear it will be the lord of the rings bandwaggon (hey, sean bean plays the nice one this time!) crashing into The Tudors, while looking cheap and superficial. But look for yourself 🙂 I’ll definitely give it a look…rome was good, sporanos also…but there is still a bit of doubt left…and april is coming (release is 4/17/211)
